So Easy, My Kid Could (and Does) Do It
I’m a mom of two amazing kids who are becoming increasingly concerned about the planet. So much so that they often school me on how we can be more eco-friendly at home.
About a month ago, my 8-year-old came home jumping for joy because her classroom was selected to receive a Lomi Smart Waste Composter from Pela as part of a sustainability education partnership between the brand and GrowNYC. Of course, she immediately asked if we could get one at home too.
At that point, I didn’t know what Lomi was. As a busy mom and a New Yorker, I’d never considered composting because: A. my “yard” is the size of a closet, B. it takes forever and needs a lot of love, and C. the smell…and the unwanted critters.
But, I told my daughter I’d do some digging to learn more. I’m so glad I did.
Lomi: Making Garbage Optional
On a mission to keep 10 billions of pounds of food waste out of landfills by 2028, Lomi is helping us all do our part to create a waste-free future and leave the planet better than we found it.
See, when we toss food waste, it goes straight to a landfill where it gets trapped under a literal ton of plastic. Long story short: when organic waste doesn’t have the air to decompose, it releases greenhouse gases and toxic chemicals that can leach into the groundwater.
The Lomi Composter is effortless and odorless—and the device fits right on your countertop. All you have to do is throw your kitchen scraps in, toss in a probiotic LomiPod, close the lid, push a single button, and in as little as four hours, you have fresh soil to use (or toss if you don’t have a use for it).
Choosing the Right Option
Lomi has three different packages to choose from:
- The Lomi Starter Package: which includes a Lomi, plus 45 cycles of filters and pods for $499.
- The Lomi Essentials Package: which comes with a Lomi and a 1 year filter subscription for $451.11, plus the filter refill cost of $26.96 every 3 months.
- The Lomi VIP Package: which costs $627.04. This includes a Lomi, 180 cycles of filter refills, 90 cycles of LomiPods, priority support, and an extended warranty.
I picked the bestselling Lomi Essentials Package with quarterly refills, so we could commit to making a positive and long-lasting change. A month in, I have to say it was absolutely worth the investment into my home, family, and the planet—and here’s why:
1. It’s True, One Button Does the Trick
We gave Lomi the first try a few days after receiving it. It could not be easier to use, fitting seamlessly into our routine. We joyfully diverted our fruit and veggie peels, eggshells, coffee grounds, salmon skins, and week-old leftovers into the composting bin—and once it was nearly full, we started a cycle and the device went to work zapping our scraps into soil.
The next morning, we had a small pile of nutrient-rich dirt about 1/5 of the volume we’d put in. My daughter said it was like magic, and I have to agree. When the alternative is months of tending to an oozing pile of rotting trash, it was pretty miraculous to see Lomi in action.
2. Chic-As-Can-Be
As I mentioned, I live in New York—which means I don’t have space to spare. That was one of the main reasons I was attracted to Lomi: it’s about the size of an air fryer, and it was designed to sit right on your countertop. It’s hard to believe that such a cute and compact device can be so powerful and effective.
The sleek design makes it look more like a really fancy toaster than a waste disposal system, and it’s something I’m proud to display on my countertop (though it would also fit in a cabinet). I’d be lying if I said I don’t show it off every time I have friends over…
3. No Weird Compost-y Smells (or Pests)
Lomi uses filters with activated charcoal that eliminate any smells. I was skeptical that the process would be odorless, but the easy-to-insert filters work perfectly, and it’s so simple to clean. All you have to do is pull the bucket out, rinse it with hot water and give it a good scrub to remove any hardened food waste. A quick dry, and it’s ready to go again.
Plus, in the last month I’ve only had to take out the trash twice—and that’s because we no longer have to deal with the smell of vegetable scraps decomposing. So not only does Lomi make our lives easier, but it actually makes my kitchen cleaner (and fruit fly-free).
4. We Can Use It All Year
The beauty of having an indoor composting device is that it’s shielded from the elements. That means we don’t have to trek outside in the snow, deal with the bugs in the summertime, or worse: nosy animals like raccoons or rats. Plus, unlike an outdoor composting bin that requires constant agitation, each Lomi round is one-and-done.
My kids have taken charge of our composting process and have decided to maintain a soil bin on the patio. In the spring they’re going to create a small garden in our tiny Brooklyn backyard and use the soil for planting. I can’t wait to see what they can grow!
5. Keeps Our Food Waste Out of Landfills
Last but not least, I love that Lomi is helping us decrease our carbon footprint. Before I did my research, I didn’t think much about the greenhouse gases that are generated from food rotting in landfills and how composting can hugely help mitigate climate change.
According to the EPA, food is the single largest category of material placed in municipal landfills in the United States—and the methane it emits when it decomposes plays a key role in rising temperatures. Thanks to my daughter, we’re doing our part the best we can, and I’m encouraging all of my friends and family to do the same.
The Dirt on Lomi
One of the biggest things that convinced me to invest in a Lomi was reading through some of their nearly 3,000 reviews. From hardcore gardeners who love the high-quality soil the composter produces to eco-curious moms like me, everyone who has a Lomi raves about it.
